Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Arkolektif, submissions, and how the archive works.
What is Arkolektif?
Arkolektif is a non-profit digital archive dedicated to documenting and preserving the visual arts of Mauritius. The archive focuses on fine art practices including painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media works.
Is Arkolektif a gallery or marketplace?
No. Arkolektif is an archival and cultural initiative, not a commercial gallery or sales platform. The archive exists to document, preserve, and make accessible Mauritian visual art. No artworks are sold and no prices are published.
Who can submit work?
Arkolektif accepts submissions from Mauritian artists, artists of Mauritian origin or heritage, and Mauritian artists living in the diaspora. The archive welcomes both emerging and established artists.
Does submitting guarantee inclusion?
No. Arkolektif is a curated archive. All submissions are reviewed according to relevance, documentation quality, metadata completeness, and archival suitability. You will always be notified of the outcome.
What types of work are accepted?
The archive currently focuses on visual fine arts including painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media works. Additional categories may be considered over time.
Who owns the artworks and images?
Artists retain full copyright and ownership of their works. Arkolektif only receives permission to archive and display submitted materials within the context of the project.
Can my images be downloaded or reused by others?
Arkolektif cannot prevent this. Once images are publicly visible online, they can be downloaded, screenshotted, or reused by anyone regardless of copyright. Arkolektif includes a copyright notice on every record and does not facilitate or condone unauthorised use, but cannot technically enforce your rights against third parties. If protecting your images from copying is a priority, consider submitting at documentation resolution rather than print quality.
Why are photography standards important?
Arkolektif functions as a long-term digital archive. Consistent and accurate documentation helps preserve artworks properly, maintain archive quality, support research and education, and ensure visual consistency across the platform.
Can artworks be removed later?
Artists may request updates, corrections, or removal from public display. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Certain internal archival records may still be retained for documentation purposes.
Does Arkolektif sell artworks?
No. Arkolektif does not sell artworks, process transactions, or operate as an art marketplace.
Is the archive contemporary or historical?
Both. Arkolektif documents both contemporary and historical Mauritian visual arts.
Is Arkolektif open access?
Yes. The archive is designed as a publicly accessible cultural resource for artists, researchers, students, curators, educators, and the wider public.
How are submissions reviewed?
Submissions follow a six-stage workflow: submission, initial review, documentation review, metadata verification, curatorial approval, and publication.
Does Arkolektif archive all submissions?
No. Arkolektif archives only accepted submissions.
Can institutions collaborate with Arkolektif?
Potentially, yes. Arkolektif may develop future collaborations with museums, universities, galleries, researchers, and cultural organisations. The archive remains independent and preservation-focused.
How is Arkolektif funded?
Arkolektif currently operates independently as a non-profit initiative. Future sustainability may involve grants, partnerships, community support, and cultural preservation initiatives.
Why was Arkolektif created?
Arkolektif was created in response to the need for a structured and accessible archive dedicated to Mauritian visual arts. Many artworks and artistic histories remain undocumented or fragmented across private collections, studios, exhibitions, and personal archives. The project aims to help preserve this cultural memory for future generations.
